Listen: Five of the Best

Every week here at life at noise, we give you a peek at some of the tunes that have been rocking our world. Here’s five of the best.

1. Apache Beat — Last Chants

This New York five piece formed in 2007. They have given us a few very DIY releases, but in 2010 we will see their debut record, Last Chants. There are certainly elements of a hipster New York band here but there are also, and wonderfully so elements of a true post-punky, indie joys.

They seem to be a fan of the remix and are definitely entrenched in the Brooklyn scene.

Hear them and check them here.

2. Tran Qual — Avant Garden

Now and again you simply stumble upon something. With Tran Qaul that is exactly what happened, checking out another band and here we go.

Hailing from Boston this is the solo project of Gerry Roche. It is avant-garde in description and definitely has that feel. It is haunting at times, loud at others but generally quite atmospheric and wonderful.

He is giving the record away for free.

Check it here, and him here.

3. Carl Calm — Dayglo Port

Carl Calm is the solo work of Eric Lanham of the Caboladies. This is super up-tempo, atmospheric ramblings and a wonderful use of a multitude of instruments. Originally from Kentucky, he now resides in Chicago.

This record will be released through the German Label Dekorder

Listen to it here, or buy it here.

4. Pearl and The Beard — Black Vessel EP

Something for the romantics. Pearl and the Beard are an interesting three-piece from New York. Guitar, drums and a cello are an interesting combination. Think Fleet Foxes and a more accessible Bon Iver and you have this band.

They have been kicking around for some time but the Black Vessels EP is their first. Released on Family Records, it will not be for everyone, but it is very cutesy, which is always lovely.

Check them here, or download it here.

5. Reverse Engine Ear — One and The Same

Perth local lad Michael Tyrie is Reverse Engine Ear. Formerly in Team Sport, the band spilt and Tyrie went off on his own tangent.

When I first heard his track “Educated Guesses” I incorrectly stated it was a new Thom Yorke song, not a bad comparison I believe. He has creating a bunch of little demos and playing a little around Perth.

Hear him here, and check him out here.
