A Minute With Rabbit Island

In the latest edition in our series of interviews with Perth artists, we spend a minute with Rabbit Island and ask the tough questions…

Describe your music in five words or less.
Semi on-purpose deloping. (Deloping is a real word; eugoogly it)

What’s going on right now in the world of Rabbit Island?
Songs, shows, ‘record’ buttons, with a side of Gulls. Me and Clint and Kuz (from The Growl) made a song the other day. That was fun. The guy from New Weird Australia likes Rabbit Island so he’s putting the song ‘My Own Private’ on a compilation, and he’s prolly gonna take my other band Gulls on tour over east, but I don’t know if I should fly/drive around that much for carbon reasons. I made an album with buddies, O God Come Quick, and I want to finish making film clips for the last few songs that don’t have them yet (see below). I’ll make some new things soon and I’ve got some fun shows to do.… Apart from that; chillin, chillin, mindin my business… Actually, that could have been my five words for the five words thing…

What are the worst and best gigs you’ve ever played and why?
Far out. My brother came to a show and told his friends afterwards “I’m sorry I put you through that.” But I actually thought I/we didn’t suck that bad at that show… Sometimes I’m terrible, usually if I think people don’t like what I’m doing. But yeah, probably bawling my eyes out after that show my brother hated was a lowish moment.

Best is hard… Umm… I liked having Emlyn Johnson play the first song for my set at my album launch, one of his songs, Timber Tiger Man. Just any shows where I get to close my eyes and everything swirls all around and I feel good. Actually, maybe my favourite was a Gulls show where me and Matt Aitken launched a double CD on the gazebo out on the water at Lake Monger. Or the first Triangles show with Dave Egan where mainly it was improvised and it all just was like black magic.

Tell us something about your music that we might not know.
I started making songs because I’d written this poem about watching the Tigers play one time at HQ and I wanted to send it to them but I thought I should have something else to send as well, so I made a song to go with it.

You’re putting together your perfect local gig. Who would you get to play, why and where? Feel free to include acts/DJs/bands/venues that no longer exist.

Frozen Ocean, Mercy Mercy, The Growl, Triangles, Seven Weapons, Carbuncle, Adam Said Galore, Andrew Sinclair, SmRts, Erasers, Usurpers, Mental Powers, Craig McElhinney and Cosmo Gets under a doona. Maybe make them all miniature, like really miniature, and have them under the doona in my bed. A twenty minute set each. And Amber Gempton doing a solo set in the morning, with a full breakfast, like poached eggs, spinach, tomatoes, feta, toast, italian sausage. And the next day all the other bands I like from here. Why? Because they’re all fricken awesome. And so are HEAPS of other bands from here. Seriously that’s my serious opinion.
