Marnie Stern

Labelling the music of singer/songwriter/guitar wizard Marnie Stern isn’t simple. But whether you describe it as art-metal, math-rock or bubble-pop, you don’t want to miss this rising star who is heading to Perth for the first time with bass player Nithin Kalvakota and drummer Vincent Rogers on Saturday, October 8 at The Bakery.

Pitchfork describes her as “genre of one” saying “there’s plenty here for musicians to analyze and dissect with envy…” And boy can she shred. What makes Stern better than any of the other hundreds of guitar wizards is her uncanny ability to transform the most complicated guitar acrobatics into beautiful and concise pop.

Hers is an art suitable for everyone from the harshest critic to your mum and kid sister. Coming from the Upper East Side of Manhattan, Stern admits she didn’t listen to “good” music (her words) until she was 23. The first thing she heard that made her head spin was Sleater-Kinney followed a few years later by Hella, Boredoms and Melt Banana. A Don Caballero video introduced her to the fingertapping technique she now expertly uses.

For the last several years she has played guitar for at least three hours a day because she feels guilty when she doesn’t play. And it’s paid off. Stern is one of the rare artists who signed to label, Kill Rock Stars after sending in a demo tape.
Next month, Stern is playing dates in the US with The Flaming Lips – check out what she has to say about it in her tour blog.
